Can its new found form in magnesium oil produce the same benefits? <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"css-ofixhy et3p2gv0\">\u201cMagnesium oil, often encountered in the form of a spray, is a topical treatment that has gained popularity through various social media promotions and marketing campaigns,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerhealthdigest.com\/author\/kelsey-costa\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.consumerhealthdigest.com\/author\/kelsey-costa\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Kelsey Costa, R.D.N.\" class=\"body-link css-16fs9zm et3p2gv0\" rel=\"noopener\">Kelsey Costa, R.D.N.<\/a> Ahead, what you should know about magnesium oil and its potential benefits.<\/p>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"body-h2 css-4gohwq et3p2gv0\"><strong>What Is Magnesium Oil?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-ofixhy et3p2gv0\">\u201cThe oil is a mix of magnesium chloride flakes and water, [and] is touted for its potential to improve magnesium levels in the body when absorbed through the skin,\u201d says Costa. Magneisum oil is not meant to be ingested.<\/p>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"body-h2 css-4gohwq et3p2gv0\">Does Magnesium Oil Have Any Health Benefits?<\/h2>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-ofixhy et3p2gv0\">Despite it being a social media darling, the scientific verdict is still out on whether magnesium oil has any proven health benefits. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-ofixhy et3p2gv0\">\u201cMagnesium oil, often marketed as a transdermal supplement, is touted for its supposed superior effectiveness compared to oral forms,\u201d says Costa. This claim lacks substantial scientific evidence, though. A 2017 study published in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5579607\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5579607\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Nutrients\" class=\"body-link css-16fs9zm et3p2gv0\" rel=\"noopener\">Nutrients<\/a><\/em> noted oral magnesium supplements being more effective than transdermal supplements. \u201cThe notion of transdermal magnesium outperforming its oral counterparts is a relatively recent trend, largely propelled by marketing strategies rather than scientific evidence.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-ofixhy et3p2gv0\">That said though, Costa says there have been a few small studies that show some potential benefits, including one published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26343101\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26343101\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Journal of Integrative Medicine\" class=\"body-link css-16fs9zm et3p2gv0\"><em><u>Journal of Integrative Medicine<\/u><\/em><\/a> in 2015 found that applying magnesium oil on the arms and legs of fibromyalgia patients helped alleviate symptoms like pain. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-ofixhy et3p2gv0\">For now, though, oral magnesium supplements are the best route if a trusted healthcare practitioner determines magnesium supplementation is best for you. \u201cNumerous research studies emphasize the health benefits of orally ingested magnesium from food and supplements, \u201d says Costa.<\/p>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"body-h2 css-4gohwq et3p2gv0\"><strong>How to Use Magnesium Oil<\/strong> <\/h2>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-ofixhy et3p2gv0\">Due to the current lack of scientific research supporting magnesium oil use, there are no recommended guidelines from accredited organizations specifying how often you should apply magnesium oil and how much you should use. Some magnesium sprays may recommend on the bottle to apply 15-20 sprays twice a day for best results, while others simply say to &#8216;apply liberally&#8217;. You shouldn\u2019t overdo it, though, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Magnesium-Consumer\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Magnesium-Consumer\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"National Institutes of Health\" class=\"body-link css-16fs9zm et3p2gv0\"><u>National Institutes of Health<\/u><\/a> said that adults shouldn&#8217;t take above 350 mg per day of magnesium in dietary supplements and medications, Costa says. Talk to your doctor about how to safely apply. Rub it directly onto dry, clean skin. Store magnesium oil in a cool, dry place.<\/p>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"body-h2 css-4gohwq et3p2gv0\">Potential Side Effects of Magnesium Oil<\/h2>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-ofixhy et3p2gv0\">Again, due to a dearth of scientific evidence, it\u2019s best to stick to magnesium supplements that you swallow. With that in mind, Bhojraj said that topical formulations of magnesium may help \u201cavoid gastrointestinal side effects of some magnesium supplements, such as bloating, gas, and loose bowel movements.\u201d <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-ofixhy et3p2gv0\">Using magnesium oil on your skin may lead to a stinging or burning sensation for some people, so try it on a small patch of skin to see how you respond before going spray-crazy.
