(NewsNation<\/a>) \u2014 The Trump administration is escalating its efforts to combat fraud<\/a> in the health care system, a move officials say could reduce government waste and extend key programs.<\/p>\n

Dr. Mehmet Oz, administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, said eliminating fraud could significantly strengthen the financial outlook of federal health programs.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we could just take the fraud out of Medicare, we would double the life expectancy of the Medicare Trust Fund,\u201d Oz said during an appearance on NewsNation\u2019s \u201cBatya!\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Oz estimated that as much as $100 billion has been lost to fraud across Medicare and Medicaid, pointing to hospice care as a major area of concern.<\/p>\n

He said 800 hospices were recently suspended, a move the administration estimates will save taxpayers about $1.4 billion. Oz also said suspected fraud patterns identified in California have surfaced in states including Nevada, Arizona and Texas.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe numbers in California \u2014 the idea that one\u2011third of all the hospices in the whole country are in one city \u2014 that\u2019s impossible,\u201d Oz said. \u201cClearly, there was fraud. The question is, why wasn\u2019t it addressed?\u201d<\/p>\n

Oz said federal officials have implemented a nationwide moratorium on new hospices and home health care providers until oversight improves.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have passed a national moratorium \u2014 no new hospices and no new home health care until we can actually get our arms around this,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Dr. Oz: J-1 visa holders shouldn\u2019t be allowed to own hospices<\/h2>\n

Oz also raised concerns about international visa programs, including the Optional Practical Training program, which allows foreign students to work in the United States after graduation.<\/p>\n

He said investigators identified thousands of participants linked to potential fraud and argued that visa holders, including those on J\u20111 visas, should not be allowed to own or operate hospices.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s actually been happening,\u201d Oz said. \u201cThat was one of the red flag items identified in California that we are taking action on.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that irregular billing patterns can signal fraud.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re not ever seeing people pass in hospice, there\u2019s fraud there,\u201d Oz said.<\/p>\n

Dr. Oz: Fraud crackdown happening no matter Left or Right states<\/h2>\n

Asked whether enforcement efforts were focused on Democratic\u2011led states, Oz said fraud exists nationwide and the administration is targeting cases across the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact of the matter is we\u2019ve been going after red states and blue states,\u201d he said. \u201cFraud happens all over America.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oz cited investigations in states such as Florida and New York as part of the broader crackdown.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re governor of a state, you\u2019d think you\u2019d want to shut down fraud,\u201d Oz acknowledged. \u201cBut we\u2019re seeing the opposite. We\u2019re seeing that there\u2019s not a serious effort to deal with these crises.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t want federal dollars that are supposed to be used to help our most vulnerable citizens \u2026 we don\u2019t want those dollars being siphoned off for other purposes that may purely be used for political reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n
