As RSV cases peak, doctors keep eye on concerning trend among babies

RSV cases continue to spike across Oregon and southwest Washington, with the anticipated peak in hospitalizations just one day away.

According to the Oregon Health Authority, nearly 25% of completed RSV tests were positive the week before Thanksgiving.

On Tuesday, Multnomah County Health Officer Dr. Jennifer Vines confirmed most cases are mild, but health experts are keeping an eye on a concerning trend.

“There is a sort of surprising number of infants needing to actually go on breathing machines, so there is a level of severity especially among those infants that is surprising to our pediatrician hospitalists,” Vines said.

Vines said if your child is having difficulty breathing on day five of illness you should bring them into a doctor.

Most kids will completely recover in about two weeks.

The surge in pediatric RSV cases this year has strained OHSU’s Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and Legacy Health’s Randall Children’s Hospital, pushing them into crisis standards of care, meaning they could break from some of their standard staffing protocols to check in more patients.
