After 2 decades, mobile eye surgery van to be used for health camps in Indore

INDORE: Veronica, a high tech in-built mobile eye surgery van which was stationed at the RNT campus of Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV) for two decades will finally be put to use by the Centre of Excellence for Eye.
After getting approval from the executive council, the varsity had affirmed giving the van to the Centre of Excellence for Eye which is affiliated to MGM Medical College. However, as the vehicle hasn’t been functional for two decades, it will have to be repaired ahead of its hand over.
“As it is a Mercedes van, it cannot be repaired by any random mechanic. We will be getting the repair work done. After getting it in running mode and it will be handed over in a span of one month,” deputy registrar (administration) Prajwal Khare said.
The van, donated by Dr Arnold in the name of his wife Dr Veronica via trust, was given in 2001.
The van was donated during the term of the then VC of DAVV Dr Bharat Chhaparwal.
It was given to conduct faco and lens implantation as Dr Veronica had felt the need to provide medical services in rural and inaccessible areas.
Veronica is the eye surgery unit fitted inside a fully air-conditioned automated Mercedes van.
It consists of two operation theatres, a faco microscope, orating trolleys and other equipments which were worth around Rs 2 crore.
“A team of five doctors have inspected the van and we had a talk with the varsity officials to give it to us in a functional condition as it hasn’t moved in several years,” superintendent of Centre of Excellence for Eye, Dr DK Sharma said.
This van will be put to use for the health camps, he added.
