„It’s 2018 and progress is here!“ Says poetry slamer Rainer Holl. “World knowledge is piling up. But somehow it doesn’t work. We have complexes because the world is becoming more complex. And what should you do – come on, I’ll ask Alexa.” Everyone laughs. Probably because they recognize themselves. With these words, the slamer and moderator Rainer Holl heralds the science slam on a hot evening in the Munich Kammerspiele. The motto: „Living progress“. This is just one of eight slams organized by the publisher in eight different cities within two months whoops be held.

A few minutes earlier we entered the building without knowing what a science slam even is. Individually, the words mean something to us, of course – science is science and slam stands for this cool kind of speaking competition. The combination sounds exciting, but we can’t imagine much of it. And what is this motto all about? We are curious.

„Living progress“

In the foyer we can expect a stand from the Techniker Krankenkasse, which promotes the Science Slam series and also gave it its motto: „living progress“ is also the name of the technicians‘ campaign. Rainer Holl, moderator of the evening, explains in an interview with ZEITjUNG: „The basic idea behind the ‚Living Progress‘ campaign, namely making tomorrow’s ideas available today, corresponds one to one with the basic idea of the Science Slam. For the technicians‘ campaign, the Science Slam was the right launch vehicle, and for us, the campaign was the right rocket fuel.“ The technicians are already using the latest technologies. They look progressively to the future and understand that sometimes the standards are not necessarily the best possible option. They do not care about „the“ health, but about your individual health. And that is exactly what makes it a recognized pioneer among statutory health insurance companies.

We spot VR glasses at the information stand and sense our chance to finally try one out. As soon as we open them, we move through the human body. And are immediately impressed. Advanced technology such as virtual reality can transport us to other worlds. As we float back and forth between cells, we gain a very different awareness of our bodies and health. Makes sense. But before we fly through our bodies all evening, we take a seat and want to learn something not only virtually, but also from real people.

„Not always higher, faster, further, louder, better, even more blatant. Sometimes smarter, more elegant, quieter and with the appropriate class. Progress is not always just a new invention. Sometimes it’s just a completely new point of view,“ Rainer’s slam text continues. Interesting thought, we had never seen it like this before.

He explains to the audience what the science slam goes. In the coming hours, five participants will take the stage and each present a scientific topic within ten minutes. And in such a way that everyone can understand. Whether with Power Point, singing, dancing or disguised – there are no limits to creativity. At the end we, the audience, will decide with applause which participant wins the competition. The difference to the poetry slam is that “there are fewer participants here who have a higher time limit and get through the evening together. The dynamic is completely different. It’s not just about entertaining, but also about imparting knowledge“.

It’s hot and the room is crowded. And yet the atmosphere is great right from the start. When the first participant Matthias Mader then enters the stage and shows us how to make invisible nanoparticles visible with self-drawn figures walking across the screen and the most beautiful Bavarian language, we laugh every second. Questions can be asked between the lectures and if you ask clever questions, you get chocolate. great deal Mogan Ramesh shows us solutions how we can answer the philosophical question „Where do I want to go?“. We learn from Ulrike Neumann how microalgae could feed the growing population of this earth, but also learn that too large amounts turn our skin orange. We learn from sports psychologist Vanessa Wergin, who confidently rolls onto the stage on roller skates, that people react differently when the cohesion of their sports team breaks down. But the winner of the evening is computer scientist Jonas Betzendahl. With his „Fire together, Wire together“ we now know where the problems of machine learning lie. Maybe this mystical world of technology catches us, but maybe also his warm nature.

Can the Science Slam make a difference?

Ideally, the audience should take one or maybe even two or three pieces of new information home with them from such an evening. But Rainer Holl knows that this kind of slam can do so much more. “In the beginning, the scientific institutes had reservations. But in the meantime they have realized that there can be no better advertising for them and their STEM courses. Science comes alive here. In addition, an exchange takes place and contacts are made. And the Science Slam presentation technique is used to teach trainees these skills. Everyone benefits from the fact that this hermetically sealed academic operation is broken up.”

What we take away from this successful evening is that progress starts in the mind and can be anywhere. Progress is microalgae, progress is intelligent machines, progress is questioning, trying out and developing new ways of thinking. Rainer Holl sums it up. So his last words are also ours: „For people and for companies who see themselves as progressive, who lead the way and don’t always step in the same place, for them progress doesn’t just always mean ‚everything is possible‘. True progress sometimes simply means ‚We need to do something different‘.”
