Max’s hit series, The Gilded Age, debuted its first season on the streamer in 2022, and gained a loyal following of period-piece-lovers and newbies alike. The show is set in, you guessed it, the Gilded Age in New York City, which was a big period of economic and social change in the U.S.
The series follows a beautiful young woman named Marian Brook who she moves in with her old-money aunts in upper Manhattan. Viewers follow along as Marian learns about the Dos and Don’ts of society’s upper crust, and meets a lot of quirky characters along the way. Of course, there’s love, mystery, and intrigue, as well as some absolutely fabulous costumes. What’s not to love?!
More than a year after the series’ debut, season 2 is finally dropping on Max on October 29, so naturally, people are already looking ahead to season 3. But will there actually be a third season for The Gilded Age?
Here’s everything we know right now.
What happens in The Gilded Age season 2?
A lot, actually. Season 2 kicks off with another snub for Bertha Russell in the form of a rejection for her bid for a box at the Academy of Music. Still, always the fighter, she continues trying to get accepted into New York’s high society—and finally begins to emerge as a leader by the end of the season.
In other plot developments, Marion starts secretly teaching at a girls’ school, while Ada begins a new courtship. George Russell deals with a new union at his steel plant, and Peggy becomes an activist.

Will there be a season 3?
As of right this second, there’s no word on whether there will be a third season of The Gilded Age coming down the pipeline. That doesn’t mean it *won’t* happen. It just means that the producers and streamer haven’t made any announcements yet. They may just want to see what viewership is like this season to see if it’s worth moving forward.
When would a third season air?
Season 2 is just dropping this weekend on Max, and season 1 debuted in January 2022, so it’s hard to say. Throw the SAG-AFTRA strike in the mix and things are really uncertain when it comes to timelines.
Plus, with all the glitz, glam and period-specific outfits, it’s likely that these installments take a long time to film.
What have the showrunners said about a third season?
Francesca Orsi, HBO’s head of drama, opened up to Deadline about future plans for The Gilded Age, and made it clear that season 3 isn’t a guarantee right now.
“We’re just assessing various shows, what more we need to be making, what more we can make, what more we have, the return in life of a series,” she said. “Of course, each show has a job to do, given the price tag that we give to it, and there’s a viewership. component, and there’s a critical response element to it and of course, the buzz nature of a show. It’s those elements that we are always keeping in mind and discussing relative to whether or not a show will continue.”
She continued, “That factors in for Perry Mason, for Winning Time, for instance, for Gilded Age, so we have to play everything out and see how well they do.”
Is there a trailer yet?
Nope, there’s no trailer yet because they’d have to announce a season first, but the one for season 2 was really juicy. Here’s another look in case you missed it:
Who could be in the cast for a future season?
A third season would likely feature the main cast that everyone has come to know and love since season 1, which includes:
- Louisa Jacobson as Marian Brook
- Christine Baranski as Agnes van Rhijn
- Cynthia Nixon as Ada Brook
- Carrie Coon as Bertha Russell
- Morgan Spector as George Russell
- Denée Benton as Peggy Scott
But, of course, anything can happen between now and a possible third season. So, for now, just enjoy that second season drama!
