Far West Regionals Class B football preview: Health Sciences/BASC/Global vs. Monroe

Who: Health Sciences/BASC/Global Charter (10-1) vs. Monroe (11-0).

When: 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Williamsville South.

What to expect: If the Falcons were looking for a test, they found one in Monroe, which has shut out its last 10 opponents. The Red Jackets allowed six points in the season opener and have not allowed a point since, an average of 0.6 points per game. Meanwhile, they score an average of 47.2 points per game. 

Health Sciences, winners of six in a row, averages 36.7 points per game and 410.4 yards per game on offense and holds opponents to 11.2 points in its first season as a merged program. Health Sciences was paired with WNY Maritime and advanced to the state semifinals in 2019 and 2021 (There were no state champions in 2020.)

Health Sciences/BASC/Charter defeated Depew 46-0 in the quarterfinals, beat Maryvale 14-0 in the semifinals and topped it off with a 38-27 victory against Pioneer in the final.

Leading the Falcons is Connolly Cup finalist Antwan Ceasar, with 164 carries for 1,582 yards and 17 touchdowns. Against Pioneer, he had 26 carries for 210 yards. Kavon Pitts recorded 724 yards and seven touchdowns on 59 carries. Tyrone Hughes Jr. ran for 389 rushing yards and three touchdowns, while also having a team-high 46 tackles.

Shamere Banks is the team’s quarterback and has gone 67 of 125 on his attempts, with 1,311 passing yards and 19 touchdowns.

Monroe defeated Rochester Prep 78-0 in the quarterfinals, beat Wayne 42-0 in the semifinals, and shut out Honeoye Falls-Lima 26-0 in the final. It was the program’s first sectional title since 1979.

Monroe’s Khaya Moses has completed 80 of 125 passes, throwing for 1,706 yards and 34 touchdowns. His top target is Messiah Hampton, with 39 receptions for 565 yards. On the ground, Tahjmir Mullins has 79 carries for 639 yards and eight rushing touchdowns. Defensively, Robert Arnold has 77 tackles and 21.5 sacks, while Dashon Constantine has 59 tackles and 13 sacks.

Next: Winner plays at 3 p.m. on Nov. 25 at Cicero-North Syracuse in the West final against Indian River (Section III) or Maine-Endwell (Section IV).
