Despite giving the world a catalogue of breakup bops to cry to for at least three millennia, Adele’s happy and in love.

Following her recent divorce, Adele released her latest album 30 about the heartbreak of her split. She dedicated it to her nine-year-old son—to help him understand why it happened. And as with most of Adele’s musical releases, the singer reemerged for a round of press and performances after laying low for a few years. Only this time she came back on the scene with boyfriend Rich Paul, a big-time sports agent who reps stars including LeBron James.

The couple initially met at a party a few years back, Adele told Vogue, but didn’t date until the start of 2021. They made things public that summer. Adele told British Vogue she’d dated before Rich, but with him it was different. He wasn’t “frazzled by it all–” meaning her fame. “He’s great. He’s so f**kng funny. He’s so smart, you know,” she went on.

It’s rare thing to hear from the singer herself. She’s long admitted her love for playing the press and keeping them out of the loop, but her candor this year has offered a glimpse at her growth, healing process, and new love.

Even though Adele will inevitably retreat into the shadows again, rest assured this new-romance glow isn’t likely to fade any time soon. Body language expert Karen Donaldson is sure of it. Ahead, she breaks down how Adele and Rich’s body language proves they’ve got something beautiful and real between them.

1 Adele is the dominant partner, and Rich is into it.

Adele walks slightly ahead of Rich, which, Donaldson explains, means she likely takes the lead in the relationship. This works for some couples and for others it doesn’t.

But in this case, Donaldson knows it’s fine because of the way they’re holding hands. “It tells us that there is love and affection in the relationship,” she says. And Rich’s solid hold on Adele’s hand shows he’s comfortable adjusting to Adele’s needs and lifestyle. Plus, it’s likely she does the same for him.

2 They’re proud of their love.

“Adele’s body language speaks volumes in this image. Her entire body is leaning in towards Rich,” Donaldson says.

Because Adele crosses her legs in Rich’s direction and tilts her upper-body toward him, Donaldson knows Adele’s attention is fully on him.

“Rich, in return, leans into her, too,” she adds. This is “love bug” body language, explains Donaldson. They’re carving out an intimate moment for themselves, despite the crowd and all the eyes on them. They’re proud of their love and think it deserves to be showcased.

3 They’re willing to put in the effort.

“Adele is clearly fully enjoying a moment with Rich,” says Donaldson. “She looks back and her face is fully engaged in a genuine smile.”

By lowering her mask for a moment, Donaldson says, Adele is removing the barriers between them so she can connect with him—even if it’s brief.

4 Adele and Rich’s bond runs deep.

This may seem casual, but Donaldson says there’s actually a lot going on here.

At first, Adele’s legs angled away from Rich isn’t a great sign, but she’s clearly focused on the basketball game they’re watching and her knee position proves that.

Still, she and Rich lean into each other and Rich’s knee is pointed toward Adele. Even when they’re attention is on other things, subconsciously, they remain bonded, says Donaldson.
