Two public school vs. private school boys basketball matchups came down to the wire Friday night.
Michael Whitt made two free throws in the final seconds to lift Health Sciences to a 51-49 victory at St. Joe’s.
Whitt and Jakari Lott finished with a team-high 14 points as Health Sciences (2-0) overcame a six-point deficit, 45-39, after three quarters.
The Marauders (1-3) were led by Jay’Meir Gosby’s 17 points.
Niagara Falls bounced back from a 30-point loss to Bishop Timon with a 75-72 victory at Nichols.
Nick Estell had a career-high 33 points and Omarion Reynolds added 20.
The Wolverines, who are playing an independent schedule, head to Charlotte, N.C., for two games in the Bam Winter Classic on Thursday and Friday.

NT, Day off to big start
Lilly Day continued to fill the stat sheet as North Tonawanda improved to 4-0 with a 53-41 victory against Frontier.
Day had 27 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and two blocks in the win.
She is averaging almost 25 points a game and 10 rebounds for the Lumberjacks, who visit Kenmore West on Tuesday before a showdown with defending Monsignor Martin champion Nichols on Wednesday.
Will East skaters
The Williamsville East hockey team is off to a 4-0 start, including outscoring two league opponents by a combined 14-1.
The Flames have allowed four goals in four games, with three coming in a 5-3, season-opening win against Batavia Notre Dame in the WNY Hockey Showcase.
Dylan Sharkey has a team-high five goals and is one of three players with a team-best seven points, joining Nick Mendola (three goals, four assists) and Noah Hoffman (seven assists).
Their next game is Wednesday against Starpoint, the two-time defending Section VI Division II champions.
Mallone tallies five
Madison Mallone, a senior at Starpoint, scored eight points, with five goals and three assists, in Niagara County’s 10-3 win Friday against Webster, a first-year program based in the Rochester area.
With the five goals, Mallone took over the top spot in scoring in the Federation with eight goals and five assists for 13 points, one more than Kenmore-Grand Island-Lockport duo of Isabella Jayne and Isabelle Bourgeault. Each has 12 points: Jayne has seven goals and five assists; Bourgeault has seven assists and five goals.
- Nardin announced the college signings of rowers Bella Morlock and Elyse Spencer. Morlock is headed to High Point University and Spencer to the University of Texas. Nardin has had eight students sign to continue their athletic careers in college, with two more expected in the spring.
- Williamsville East will host a ceremony Tuesday as Carmen Panaro will sign to play baseball at Niagara University and Roman Tedeschi will sign to swim at Bryant University.
