When discussing men’s health, there are often many complex issues that go overlooked. In recent years, awareness has extended beyond physical fitness and disease prevention, to highlighting the important relationship between men’s health and their mental well-being.
“One of the things that I am most passionate about is just how much mental health impacts physical health,” said Juan Vargas, MD, a family medicine specialist with Kaiser Permanente in Panorama City. “The mind and body are so connected and, if untreated, mental health issues can contribute to a number of physical health problems.”
Research by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has shown that chronic stress often associated with untreated mental health conditions can weaken the immune system, increase the risk of heart disease and negatively impact your overall well-being.
“Mental health is a critical aspect of overall health, and it plays a crucial role in shaping a man’s relationships and overall quality of life,” continues Dr. Vargas. “The key is to somehow help men overcome the stigma surrounding mental health by encouraging open conversations and creating a safe space for them to share their struggles.”
Vargas says there are three main points to remember when it comes to men and their health:
Make sure to have an annual check-up. Just coming in for an appointment is a good first step. If you feel anything or are encouraged by your spouse to see a physician, please do not brush it off.
Follow-up on any symptoms that are out of the ordinary. It could be an early warning sign that something needs attention.
Be open to speak with your physician about mental health. When you are visiting with your physician, speaking honestly without fear of stigmas could lead to overall better health outcomes.
“The key is to promote a safe space where patients can have open conversations about their physical and mental health,” says Dr. Vargas. “If we can empower men to prioritize seeking the support they need for their entire well-being, it could lead to a much happier and healthier life.”
