If you have sensitive skin, here’s a vitamin C serum I’d suggest you try

I get it, using vitamin C in your skincare routine can be tricky business. Not all skin types get along with this active ingredient – but, if you find the right formula for you, it can do great things for your complexion, like brighten and provide protection against UV and pollution.

I’ve played about with many bottles in search of a dewy and radiant glow, but in and amongst the pricey players I store in my cupboard sits one budget buy that never lets me down. Garnier’s Vitamin C Brightening Serum is an unwavering product in my skincare routine for adding radiance to my complexion, nixing pigment patches and acne scars (yes, I’m a serial spot picker).

Before we move further, let’s address the elephant in the room. 3.5% vitamin C (or ascorbic acid named on the INCI list) is not exactly a high percentage compared to other bottles around. If you’re after a potent serum, you can find formulations with 15-20% vitamin C.

But what makes this formula stand out to me is that it also cocktails niacinamide, to fade dark spots and boost hydration, and salicylic acid, to promote a brighter complexion. And because the vitamin C percentage is on the smaller side, it makes this formula an excellent choice for anyone new to the ingredient or if you have sensitive skin.

Unlike many formulas I’ve tried – and I’m sure you can relate to me on that one – Garnier’s serum hasn’t broken me out or induced sensitivity. Luckily, my skin barrier is sturdy, but those with reactive complexions will appreciate how lightweight the serum is. The milky, hydrating formula slips over the skin and delivers a cooling sensation, which is especially welcome on groggy mornings.

As for the results, it’s not here to mess around. Dullness and spot scarring are two of my biggest bugbears but, with continuous use, this serum has made a huge difference to the uniformity and radiance of my complexion. In fact, I’m so pleased with how my skin’s looking right now that I’m reaching for a CC cream in the morning as opposed to my foundation.

Then it’s worth talking about how this serum should be used as, like retinoids, it requires a bit of thought. To maximise its benefits, vitamin C is best applied in the morning (after cleansing) to protect the skin against environmental stressors – not to forget sunscreen. SPF is a crucial step when using vitamin C, as this will help to double down on protection against sun damage and pollution.

So, if you’re in the market for a new vitamin C serum, or if you’re a newbie trying the active for the first time, this is a bottle I’d really recommend adding to your arsenal. Better yet, today’s a great day to shop as it’s currently reduced in Amazon’s Spring Sale, knocking the price from £12.99 to £7.77.

And because I am a huge fan of Garnier’s skincare – can we all agree that the micellar water is unmatched – I’ve cherry-picked a few other products that I use on the regular, and I think you should too.
