From correct water temperature to looking away from computer screens, find out what you can do to protect your eyes.
When working long hours at the office, we often make the mistake of not caring for our eyes. But the eyes are two of the most important organs that need rest and hydration from time-to-time. Do not rub your eyes, and make sure to look away from the screen to take a little break while working. All of these, along with good nutrition, will ensure that your eyesight is proper. If you want to know more about how to keep your eyes safe while doing a demanding job, then Dr Dimple Jangda has some tips to share. Taking to Instagram, the Ayurveda and gut health coach said there are two main things that can affect your eyes and damage their health. Read on.
Improper Hair Wash
Is there a correct way to wash hair? Yes, and especially if you are trying to protect your eyes. According to the expert, washing your hair with lukewarm or hot water is not considered to be good for the eyes. The reason being that the nerves in the head region and the optical nerves are ‘extremely sensitive to heat’. As such, it is imperative to use either room temperature water or ‘slightly-cooled-down water’ to wash your hair.

Staring At The Screen
The other mistake that people commit often is that they stare at the computer screen for way too long. What happens when they do that? It is not advisable to continuously stare at the screen for more than 20 minutes. “Your eyes are literally 98 per cent water or fluids,” said the expert. You need to ensure that the fluid does not dry up. As such, look away from the screen for 20 seconds or so, after every 20 minutes. Look at something that is far, at least 20 feet away. “This helps in exercising your long-range optical nerves. Your nerves are anywhere between 1 mm to 30 mm behind your eyes and you do not want to stress your short range optical nerves,” said the Ayurveda coach.
Ayurveda Remedies For Eyes
Here is what the expert suggested you do every day:
- Early in the morning, take a mouthful of water and splash water on your eyes simultaneously. This will help in the reduction of heat in your eyes.
- Next, you can also extract cucumber juice, organic rose water and tender coconut water, and apply it on your eyes to reduce the heat and protect your optic nerves.
- The expert suggested that to protect the eyes, apply kajal made from almond oil and soot (collected by burning a wick).
- You can also use herbal eye drops, which are triphala boiled in water. It apparently helps in cleansing the eyes. You may also use herbs boiled in tender coconut water. But, consult with a doctor before applying anything inside the eyes.
Foods For Good Eye Health
As mentioned earlier, it is important to have a good diet that promotes eye health. As such, Dr Jangda suggested eating the following food items:
