HIGH COUNTRY RUNNING: Confronting the hidden mental health crisis in women’s sports

We live in a town that’s especially attuned to the Olympic cycle. And you can feel it in the thin Flagstaff air right now as many of our favorite local pro runners are descending the mountain to head to Eugene, Oregon, where they’ll compete at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials, beginning on June 21.

Around this time three years ago, when we were rooting for these athletes at the 2021 Tokyo Games, many of us were starting to talk more openly about the unique issues that girls and women face as they pursue excellence in sports. It was then that gymnast Simone Biles and global tennis star Naomi Osaka candidly told the world about their mental health struggles.
