LASIK Success Rates: How Safe Is Eye Surgery In 2024?

LASIK is generally considered a safe procedure with high satisfaction rates. However, like any surgical procedure, LASIK carries potential side effects and risks, both short term and long term, shares Dr. Edmonds.

Following the procedure, it’s normal to experience mild discomfort or pain. You may also experience burning, itching and sensitivity to light immediately after the procedure. These side effects usually resolve within a few days. A very small number of patients experience temporary eye dryness lasting three to four months, but this can typically be resolved with artificial tears, adds Dr. Doane.

Long-term risks, while uncommon, can occur. A very small number of individuals may experience vision loss or develop symptoms such as glare, halos or double vision, which can affect vision in low-light situations, such as nighttime. Another potential risk is the development of dry eye syndrome, a condition that causes discomfort and vision impairment, which may be permanent in some cases. Additionally, some people may find they still need glasses or contact lenses following a LASIK procedure.

“Many of the long-term risks of surgery can be avoided by undergoing a thorough consultation with an experienced surgeon,” says Dr. Edmonds. “Not everyone is a good candidate for LASIK. Appropriate screening prior to surgery can identify patients [who] are at increased risk of complications.”

It’s important to note, however, that severe complications are rare, and most patients are satisfied with their results. Your surgeon should discuss the potential risks and complications with you in detail prior to the procedure to ensure you have a clear understanding of the potential outcomes and can make an informed decision about undergoing LASIK.

If you think you might be a good candidate for LASIK, schedule an appointment with your eye doctor. They will assess your individual situation and help you decide whether the procedure is right for you.
