WHO Report on Physical Activity Sparks Debate in India

Union Health Minister J P Nadda addressed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, criticizing the WHO’s recent report that labeled half of India’s adult population as physically unfit. The report is based solely on data from three states and one Union Territory, raising concerns over its methodology.

According to the WHO, ‘sufficient physical activity’ is defined as 150 minutes of moderate intensity activities or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activities per week. However, the classification is based on self-reported data, which may not be reliable.

Comparative studies by the ICMR show differing results, with one survey in 2020 reporting 58.7% of Indian adults meeting the WHO’s physical activity recommendations. Nadda stressed the government’s initiatives like the ‘Fit India Movement’ to promote healthier lifestyles among citizens.
