Are silk pillowcases good for skin and hair?
Silk pillowcases have a naturally soft, smooth texture that helps reduce surface friction, protecting skin and preventing hair from tangling up through the night. According to Dr. Gross, they’re also great for those with eczema, rosacea, and acne “because there’s less chafing while you sleep.”
That said, “the data is theoretical based on the properties of silk compared too other fabrics and anecdotal based on people’s experiences,” says Dr. Castilla. “Compared to other fabrics silk imposes less frictional forces; therefore it is thought to be gentler on the skin so you may notice less wrinkles when you wake up.”
What is the best type of silk for pillowcases?
Momme measures silk density and weight. As a rule of thumb, the higher the momme, the higher the quality. Look for options with a 22 or 25 momme.
What is the best way to sleep to avoid wrinkles?
“The best way to avoid wrinkles and preserve youthful-looking skin is to sleep flat on your back,” says Dr. Gross. “When you sleep on your back, you will avoid putting extra pressure on your skin.”
If you’re a side sleeper, Dr Gross recommends adding an extra neck pillow or body pillow to “create additional space between your body and your main pillow and alleviate some of the pressure on your facial skin, neck, and chest.”
At the end of the day, “the most important thing is to get good sleep and a sufficient number of hours of sleep per night—ideally 7-9 hours,” says Dr. Castilla. “Sleep deprivation can affect the health and negatively impact the overall appearance of your skin.”
