‘Our lives, our stories’: Annual African American women’s health conference raises awareness and provides resources

PULASKI COUNTY, IL — The 14th annual African American Women’s Health Conference raised health awareness for Black in the area and inspired others.

This year’s theme was “Our lives, our stories.” Dozens of people came to Shawnee Community College on Saturday, Sept. 14, to learn more about issues impacting Black women’s health.

Attendees got to listen to stories from local women who’ve overcome challenges.

The event also offered workshops about how to have a healthy lifestyle and improve your mental health.

Ammiel Russell, the program coordinator of Legacy Training Inc., said she saw a need for events like this in the community.

“The founders of the conference were going to other kind of health conferences in our area, and they noticed that there weren’t a lot of people who looked like them, and so this was really started to have something for the black women and women of color in southern Illinois and the surrounding areas,” said Russell.

According to the nonprofit, the organization’s mission is to alleviate the poverty of the mind, body, and spirit. It hopes to promote health and expand the arts and humanities in underserved areas.
