Judi Dench shares ‘traumatic’ details of decade-long health battle

Legendary actress Dame Judi Dench has lifted the lid on her health battles after being diagnosed with a degenerative eye condition.

Since 2012, she has been living with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) which is causing her to lose her sight.

During an interview with Louis Theroux, the documentarian asked her about her condition and how bad it had become.

The Skyfall star disclosed: “Bad. Bad enough. Bad enough in that you’re quite fuzzy. You’re just a tad fuzzy.”

Louis then probed if the lack of eyesight has impacted the future of her career: “I don’t want to retire, as Judi revealed: “I’m not doing anything much at the moment because I can’t see.”

The 89-year-old also explained how she manages to learn her lines without being able to see and shared: “I’ve got to teach myself a new way of learning.

“I’ve realised that I need to know where it is on the page. I’ll teach myself a way. I know I will, as long as I don’t trip overdoing it.”

Highlighting the gravity of her condition, Judi revealed: “I can’t read the paper now, I can’t do the crossword, I can’t read a book.”

She went on to reveal that in 2017 her deteriorating eyesight forced her to stop driving.

“A couple of years ago I stopped driving,” Judi said before admitting it was one of the most “traumatic” and “appalling” moments of her life.

“But I just know I’ll kill somebody if I get behind the wheel of a car now,” she explained.

According to Hello! Judi also revealed that her mother lived with a similar condition and fears her daughter Finty will inherit it since it’s genetic.

When asked when she thought she may lose her vision entirely the actress replied: “I don’t want to say. I can see enough… You adapt to it. So I ignore it altogether.”
