If you’re thinking of ditching running leggings for shorts to catch some much-deserved sun, you’ve got to have the face to match.
We know, wearing SPF at all times is a must, but we’re pleased to say it’s never been easier to get a sunless tan. Enter: facial tanning drops.
They’re fool-proof when it comes to achieving an even faux tan and require minimal effort to apply; we’re talking no mitts required.
To see which tanning drops provided the best colour, we asked our panel of 260 testers to try a range of brands for two weeks. Scroll down to see the self-tanning drops that made the cut.
How do you use self-tanning face drops?
If you’re a fake tan rookie or been scorned in the past (let’s not even go there), tanning drops will be a game-changer.
They’re totally customisable depending on the look you’re going for — the rule is: the more drops, the deeper the tan — and they can be applied using a number of different methods.
Michaella Bolder, St. Tropez’s Tanning and Skincare Expert, says:
‘You can also combine the drops with your daily moisturiser for a lighter finish. Avoid using any exfoliating products directly before applying tan and don’t use in conjunction with vitamin A or retinol.
‘Any exfoliation must always take place at least a few hours before you apply a new layer of self-tan. And ensure you avoid any oil-based shower gels or moisturisers ahead of tanning, as the oil will act as a barrier.’
It should take between two to six drops to get an even tan, and they can be applied morning or night.
Do you need to wash off tanning drops?
If you’ve got a packed schedule and need your tan to develop ASAP, tanning drops are ace, as they don’t need to be washed off and will gradually develop throughout the day. So, you can apply after the gym, without having to worry.
How we test
Our panel of over 260 beauty testers tried out 17 brands of tanning drops for two weeks.
They assessed the tan they provided, ease of application, whether there was any patchiness or streakiness in the finish, as well as their scent.
In the Women’s Health Lab, we used our Digi-Eye machine to visually analyse how evenly each tan faded over a week, giving each product a score out of five.
