Holi 2025: The festival of colours is here, and while it is a fun occasion, the colours can be harmful for health, especially for the eyes, which are sensitive organs. There are some artificial elements in powder colours that — if they come into contact with the eyes — can cause burning, irritation and infection. In this article, Dr Archana L, consultant ophthalmologist at Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital, Bengaluru stresses on the importance of eye care while celebrating Holi, what you can do to protect your eyes from colours, along with some pre-Holi precautions and preparations. Read on.
Why Should Eye Health Be Prioritised During Holi?
According to Dr Archana, eye health must be prioritised during holi celebrations as chemical injuries from Holi colours can cause extreme damage to the eyes. It can sometimes lead to blindness, too.
How Much Harm Can Holi Colours Cause To The Eyes?
While Holi is a vibrant festival and a time for joy and celebration, the colours used during Holi can pose a risk to eye health as they contain many harmful chemicals. For instance, the dry colour powder contains many toxic chemicals like lead oxide, copper sulfate, heavy metals, acids, alkalis, mica, asbestos, talc, silica and powdered glass. Liquid colours contain an alkaline base that can cause damage to the eyes, leading to irritation, corneal damage and even blindness, the doctor warns.

How To Protect The Eyes From Infection And Irritation During Holi?
Pre-Holi Precautions:
- Use protective eye wear like goggles or sunglasses with a good seal around the eyes to prevent colour entry.
- Apply a protective layer of coconut oil or petroleum jelly around the eyes and hair to prevent the colours from sticking, and for them to be washed off easily later.
- Avoid wearing contact lenses as they can trap the chemicals and cause eye irritation.
- Tie the hair properly as loose hair can have residual colour particles that may irritate the eyes. Use a scarf or a cap to tie the hair.
While Playing Holi:
- If powder colours enter the eyes, do not rub them!
- Immediately wash the eyes with clean drinking water to remove all the colours.
- Apply lubricating eye drops to soothe the eyes.
- Visit an eye doctor immediately if there is persistent eye irritation, redness or vision problems.
- Always choose eco-friendly colours that are chemical-free. Avoid cheap, bright neon, metallic colours and stick to some earthy shades.
- Stay hydrated.
- Keep children and pets safe from harmful colours.
