Why Iowa Department of Corrections is exploring privatizing prison health care system

The Iowa Department of Corrections is exploring privatizing correctional health care, potentially employing nurses and other medical workers under a private contractor in a move intended to provide “long-term financial sustainability.”

DOC Chief of Staff Paul Cornelius in a statement Tuesday, July 8, said the department is issuing a request for proposal “to explore future options for healthcare delivery and to replace our current electronic health record system.”
