Mom shares postpartum depression journey, urges seeking help from health providers

CINCINNATI (WKRC) — Katie Harper, a mother who experienced postpartum depression following the birth of her daughter Charlotte, is encouraging other mothers to seek help from their women’s health providers.

“It hit me like a ton of bricks; I couldn’t get out of bed, I couldn’t eat, and I cried all the time,” said Harper.

Harper credited her strong relationship with her OB/GYN for helping her recognize the early signs of postpartum depression.

“Mine at least was wonderful,” Harper said. “It was hard for me at first to like recognize and admit that that’s what was going on.”

Dr. Kristin Coppage, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Ohio’s TriHealth Fitness and Health Pavilion, emphasized the importance of addressing mental health at any stage of life.

“Being active and taking care of your health, whether it be mental or physical, is important before pregnancy, during pregnancy, and after pregnancy,” said Dr. Coppage.

Dr. Coppage explained that women’s health providers are well-equipped to address mental health concerns. They can conduct blood work to ensure the body is in balance, prescribe appropriate medication if needed, and refer patients to additional resources if necessary.

Harper said that discussing her mental health with her OB/GYN was a crucial first step in her healing process. She remains with that provider for mental health care and wants other mothers to know, “It’s common, but it’s not normal.”

For those struggling with mental health concerns, the national helpline 988 can connect individuals to local providers. Dr. Coppage encourages making an appointment to discuss mental health with any provider.
