HASLETT, Mich. (WLNS) – A Biggby manager partnered with a Mid Michigan nonprofit to help kids with their mental health.
The organization Positive Somebody teams up with local stores to give kids the tools they need to have a healthy mindset.
The nonprofit has teamed up with multiple Biggby’s in the past, but had not yet teamed up with the Haslett Biggby. When Store Manager, Mahra Duncan, realized this, she jumped into action. Duncan reached out to Positive Somebody Founder and Director, Jenny Metzmaker, to collaborate.

“I know that mental health is a big struggle, especially in Lansing, where I grew up. It’s pretty much a big struggle everywhere,” said Duncan.
After the two connected, the Haslett Biggby began fundraising for the nonprofit.
“I fell in love with it, I thought it was awesome,” said Duncan.
Duncan also held a packing party at the coffee shop, assembling mental health kits called “positive packs.” Some of the store’s regular customers came out to help as well.
“I know that they have huge hearts and that’s what we needed, people with big hearts to give back,” said Duncan.
The team put together 400 positive packs. Metzmaker said they include a journal, journal prompts, a breathe stone, a fidget, a sleep mask, healthy eating tips, mental health resources and more. Metzmaker added that people like Duncan keep nonprofits going.

“Like most nonprofits, we lost some funding earlier this year,” Metzmaker continued. “Mahra has been a really great advocate for Positive Somebody and helping us get in the community. We just can’t thank her enough.”
The founder said that kids deal with a lot from school to social media.
“Without the right tools and resources, how are we supposed to expect them to cope?” said Metzmaker.
Duncan said this hits close to home for her.
“Growing up, I knew right from wrong but I didn’t have many people to model that behavior for me as a child,” said the manager.
This is why it’s so important for her store to help make a difference.

“Now that I have people looking up to me and watching my every move, it’s important to me to model what should be done,” said Duncan.
The nonprofit donated the positive packs to the Haslett High School and Haslett Middle School.
“Someone cried, someone was just super excited that we chose their school,” Duncan continued. “I have people in the Haslett schools that are very awesome to me, so to bring it this close to home was very nice.”
Positive Somebody is now in 43 schools and has donated more than 20,000 positive packs. The organization is always looking for people and businesses to sponsor them and help bring mental health resources to as many kids as possible.
