Mental health is one piece of the Wellness puzzle. The Duluth community gathered for a ribbon cutting for the new Life House wellness center. This new space will be used to continue their efforts serving teens and young adults.
Four out of five youth who received help through Life House have experienced being unhoused in their lifetime. That’s according to their executive director, Amber Sadowski. She says providing a new Life House wellness center will be a welcoming space for their mental health staff and clients. Especially with providing critical support to hundreds of teens.
“We serve 800 youth a year here at Life House. The wellness program specifically served over 250 youth last year, providing over 7,000 hours of support. That could be wellness case management, It could be therapy hours,” Sadowski continued. “Substance use counseling, getting young parents support meeting with our youth family advocate. Then they attend a lot of different groups too.”
The therapists and professionals at Life House provide substance use counseling and young parent support. Emma McLarnan, one of the staff members, says this new, welcoming space is open for anyone between the ages of 14 and 24, and no insurance is needed.
“All of our services are free and voluntary. What’s really amazing is that if a youth walks through the door at any time, they could see a therapist within five minutes. I hope that youth know that this space truly is for them,” McLarnan said. They are so incredibly welcomed and celebrated up here and that this space truly is for them. No matter who they are. If you think that this space isn’t for you, it is for you.”
Life House is available for individuals weekdays from 10am through 6pm, whether it’s for counseling, education support, or even finding employment. The Duluth Rotary and Life House will be hosting a fall harvest feast next Tuesday for youth in the Twin Ports.
