Islanders struggling with mental health during Christmas have been reminded of support services available.
Jersey’s government said The Listening Lounge, which supports adults experiencing common mental health difficulties, would remain open in the lead-up to Christmas and the new year.
It said people could access support around the clock through the digital mental health platform TogetherAll or Samaritans.
The government added anyone in need of urgent help could contact the Adult Mental Health 24-hour Crisis Team by calling 445290 while the adult Community Mental Health Team would be available from 09:00 to 17:00 GMT on Boxing Day.
Andy Weir, director of mental health services, social care and community services, said: “While the festive season could be a joyful time for many, it could be particularly challenging for others.
“We want islanders to know they don’t have to face those feelings alone – support is available and reaching out can make a real difference.”
Health professionals in Jersey have also encouraged islanders to take small steps to protect their mental wellbeing over the festive period.
The have offered the following advice:
-
Acknowledge your feelings – it is OK to feel lonely or low and recognising those emotions can help you process them
-
Stay connected – reaching out to a friend, family member or support service such as the Listening Lounge (01534 866793) or the Samaritans (116 123) can make a difference
-
Be open to everyday connections – a brief conversation with a neighbour or someone on the bus can help reduce feelings of isolation
-
Limit social media use – online comparisons can intensify loneliness, so setting boundaries may help
-
Practice self-care – activities such as exercise, mindfulness or hobbies you enjoy can support wellbeing
-
Set small goals – completing even simple tasks can provide structure and a sense of achievement
-
Spend time outdoors – being in nature can improve mood and promote calm
-
Plan ahead – having something to look forward to, however small, can help maintain a positive focus
-
Be kind to yourself – self-compassion is important, especially during difficult moments
