Practice colleagues from two Specsavers practices have been working locally in their communities to share their expertise, promote the importance of good eye health, and inspire the next generation to consider a career in optics.
Staff from Specsavers Stamford (Morrisons) attended Lincolnshire-based Stamford College’s careers fair, during which they were able to highlight to students the diverse range of pathways available within optics.
Speaking to students at the fair, representatives also reminded students that their eye exams, and any necessary glasses, are funded by the NHS for those under 19 and in full-time education.
Reflecting on the event, practice director, Hannah Smallwood, said: “Building connections with the local community is extremely important to us, so being invited to the careers fair was a real privilege. I hope we’re able to inspire the next generation to consider our industry as an option when they leave college.”
During a separate visit, staff from Specsavers Acomb attended Poppleton Road Primary, York, to talk to younger pupils about the science behind eye care as well as the importance of regular eye tests, and how to care for their vision.
Staff ran an interactive session for the children focused on teaching them about equipment, eye conditions, and the team’s day-to-day work. They also gave out optical goody bags to help them remember their visit.
Senior optical assistant at Specsavers Acomb, Dawn Ellis, said: “We know how important good eye health is, but not everyone knows how to spot the early signs of eye problems in children.
“Visiting them at school and delivering the presentation in a fun way, while keeping them entertained, can help them learn how to look after their vision and reduce any anxiety about a regular eye test.”
Christine Noonan, KS1 phase leader at Poppleton Road Primary, said that the children “really enjoyed” the session and “stayed engaged from beginning to end.”
“The team not only helped our pupils better understand the science of our eyes but also emphasised the importance of eye check-ups and what to expect during an appointment. This is especially significant to us, as clear sight is important for children’s learning and classroom engagement,” she added.
