Optometrist says eye change could be sign of high cholesterol or diabetes

An optometrist says changes in your eyes could indicate a problem with your heart – identifying conditions including high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death globally – and the eyes and heart are closely linked through the body’s circulatory system.

The small blood vessels in the eyes form part of the vascular network, meaning changes in eye health can sometimes reflect broader cardiovascular risk. Alterations in the tiny blood vessels at the back of the eye, known as the retina, may be associated with conditions such as high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol and diabetes. In some cases, these changes can be detected before other symptoms become noticeable, providing valuable insight into a person’s general health.

Dr Stephen Hannan, Clinical Services Director at Optical Express, said: “Our eyes are one of the few places in the body where clinicians can directly observe blood vessels without invasive procedures. Signs such as changes to the retinal blood vessels, unusual rings around the cornea, or subtle changes in vision can be associated with conditions including high blood pressure, raised cholesterol levels or diabetes.

“The retina relies on a steady supply of oxygen-rich blood. When circulation is affected, we may see changes in vessel size or damage to the delicate retinal capillaries, which can indicate increased cardiovascular strain.

“During National Heart Month, we want to remind people that looking after their heart also supports their vision. If you notice blurred vision, discomfort, or any changes to your eyesight, it’s important to book an eye test. Regular check-ups can help identify potential issues early and contribute to better overall health.”

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, managing blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and attending regular health screenings all play an important role in protecting both heart health and eyesight.
