How mental health and physical health go hand in hand

The mind’s mental health can have a direct impact on the body’s physical health.

Haley Wright with Sunbeam Family Services said mental health and physical health go hand in hand.

“We’re one body,” she said, ” so we’ve got to take care of both.”

Wrights said when you experience things like chronic stress, depression and anxiety, it can cause inflammation in the body. She said this makes you more susceptible to getting sick.

On the inverse, Wright also said chronic health issues like diabetes, PCOS and heart disease can also cause stress and anxiety.

“They definitely house each other,” she said. “That cycle starts to happen and can reinforce each other too.”

Wright said taking care of your body, by making sure you get enough rest is one of the first steps people can take to create good habits.

“I know that sounds simple, but a really good sleep routine is actually how both our brain and body heal itself,” Wright said.

Creating consistent routines of eating and exercising are import for health.

Lastly, Wright said it is important to keep your emotions regulated so you can have a sense of calmness.
