1,000 Burpees and Zero Days Off: Inside Conor Benn’s Relentless Fight Camp

Men’s Health caught up with Conor Benn ahead of his clash with Regis Prograis this weekend, as the 29-year-old puts the final touches on another intense training camp. From brutal conditioning sessions to dialled-in nutrition, Benn breaks down how he’s preparing for fight night – and the mindset he’s taking into the ring.

What does a typical day in camp look like?

A typical day in training camp is wake up, train, go back home, sleep, wake up, train, go back home, go to sleep. Prioritise recovery, which looks like sauna, physio, hyperbaric chamber, salt bath and then that’s that, every day.

What’s been the toughest part of this camp?

The hardest part has got to be the diet.

What’s made the biggest difference to your performance this time around?

The biggest benefits I’ve noticed in the number of my camps now have been from the hyperbaric chamber I bought. Extremely beneficial. I’m in it for an hour every day. Probably the best bit of equipment I’ve purchased.

How are you approaching fight night – mentally and physically?

Look good, feel good. Ultimately, the preparation is already done. All that’s left to do now is have fun and fight. But looking good and feeling good, and having that collaboration with Palm Angels is a blessing.

What’s one track on your playlist that gets you fired up?

When I’m in training camp I listen to a lot of funky house, garage, soul music. I listen to a lot of groovy music.

What’s something about your diet that would surprise people?

I have a full-time performance chef who cooks for me, which is absolutely phenomenal and has been a game changer. He does a lovely cherry bakewell overnight oats.

What are your non-negotiables when it comes to training kit?

I like feeling good when I’m training – the gloves and the boots have to match. The outfit has to match, has to be coordinated. I like tight tops – I train in Skins specifically.

What’s the plan straight after the fight?

Post-fight I’ll be celebrating with some good food and spending time with my kids and my family. This is my first stadium show within a year. A lot of noise, a lot hype, a lot of drama, a lot of controversy, a lot of adversity. So I just want to relax with my family and enjoy this period.

What would you tell your 16-year-old self?

Strive for greatness. Just be the best version of you that you could possibly be. Don’t listen to everybody else. Don’t listen to the haters. Don’t listen to the naysayers because there’s plenty of them, just focus on you and just being the best version of you that you can be. Don’t let anybody tell you anything’s unrealistic. Don’t let anybody tell you you can’t achieve this. Don’t let anybody tell you that it’s not possible, because for them it’s not possible. But don’t limit your belief and limit what you do, be free and go out there and achieve your dreams.

How does your diet change in camp vs out of camp?

I’m still quite good with my eating. I don’t binge, I try to eat healthy, organic, clean foods. You know, I have a chef year-round who helps prepare my food, to make sure that I’m eating the best-quality meats and best-quality food there is. You know, I’m a big person on nutrition and nutritional value and what you eat, so for me it’s just about feeling good.

What’s one session that would break the average gym-goer?

The workout would have to be 1,000 burpees. That would make sure they never came back.

What’s going through your head in the final 60 seconds before the first bell?

I’m ready to fight. That’s it. Just focused and dialled in.
