Pop-up mental health events planned after Mall of Louisiana tragedy

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Behavioral health leaders in the Capital Region are organizing pop-up mental health support events. They are also expanding resources to help the community heal after the shooting at the Mall of Louisiana.

The Region 2 Crisis Coalition, which includes local hospitals, crisis response providers and community organizations, said it is coordinating a response focused on healing and resilience.

“We extend our heartfelt prayers and condolences to the individuals and families impacted, as well as to all who witnessed or were affected by this act of violence,” said Capital Area Human Services Executive Director Dr. Janzlean Laughinghouse.

Laughinghouse said that the emotional impact reaches beyond those directly involved. Feelings of fear, grief, and confusion often follow traumatic events.

  • Launch community-based outreach and “pop-up” mental health support events starting April 29.

  • Coordinate care with hospitals and service providers.

  • Support first responders and healthcare workers affected by the tragedy.

“We want the community to know you are not alone,” Laughinghouse said. “Help is available, and it is okay to seek support for yourself, your children and those around you.”

Officials encourage anyone experiencing emotional distress to reach out for help. Resources include:

  • Call or text 988 to connect with trained crisis counselors.

  • Visit the Bridge Center at 3455 Florida Street in Baton Rouge, open 24/7.

Officials also recommend taking a free, confidential online mental health screening through the Louisiana Mental Health Association.
