Healthy Teeth: Tips for Tooth Health and Oral Hygiene

The way you brush your teeth is important.

Take your time, moving the toothbrush in gentle, circular motions to remove plaque. Unremoved plaque can harden, leading to gingivitis.

Typically, it’s best to brush your teeth for around 2 minutes. A dentist may advise on brushing for longer if you have a condition such as periodontitis.

Using mouthwash that contains fluoride can help prevent tooth decay.

However, it’s best to not use mouthwash immediately after brushing, as it will wash away the fluoride from the toothpaste.

Instead, use mouthwash at a different time during the day, such as after eating. Avoid eating or drinking for around 30 minutes after using mouthwash.

Ask your dentist for specific mouthwash recommendations. Certain brands are best for children, and those with sensitive teeth. Prescription mouthwash is also available.
