Staying Aware| Women’s Health Month: What is Bladder Botox?

May is Women’s Health Month, a time to highlight issues affecting women’s health. This month, experts at UPMC are focusing on Bladder Botox, a treatment for women dealing with pelvic floor disorders.

CBS 21’s Kennedy Miller interviewed Dr. Nazanin Silver, who specializes in urogynecology at UMPC Health.

“Urogynecology is a medical subspecialty within the field of OBGYN, and it focuses on pelvic floor disorders, such as bladder problems, urinary leakage, pelvic organ prolapses, and bowel control issues,” Dr. Silver said.

She said Bladder Botox is a quick in-office procedure usually lasting about 5 minutes.

“It’s essentially a medication that works by relaxing the bladder muscle, and what happens is it’s, the same philosophy as cosmetically when we use Botox to reduce wrinkles, but when it’s injected into the bladder wall, it calms the overactive bladder muscle, so it doesn’t squeeze as forcefully and as powerfully, reducing urinary urgency and frequency, which means the number of times you go to the bathroom, and also the urgency that you have to get to the bathroom.”

You can find more information about the procedure at UPMC’s website.
