A watchdog has recommended that 17 improvements be made to mental health services at NHS Western Isles’ largest hospital.

Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS) praised staff for their high levels of compliance with online learning, and work to reduce stress and promote wellbeing.

But it said practical elements of mandatory training at Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway, including immediate and basic life support and dealing with violence and aggression, had to be improved.

HIS also said NHS Western Isles must ensure staff carry out mandatory fire evacuation training in line with risk assessments.

NHS Western Isles said it was pleased the inspection had recognised the “compassion, professionalism and dedication” of its staff.

HIS carried out an unannounced inspection at the hospital in February.

Inspectors examined the acute psychiatric unit, the ward and procedures, and also spoke with patients, visitors and ward staff.

Chief inspector Donna Maclean said there was good compliance in some areas, but others had been identified as requiring improvement.

NHS Western Isles said it welcomed the report and the opportunity it provided to identify areas for improvement.

A spokesperson added: “Delivering safe, high-quality care in an island setting brings additional challenges, and we are proud that our teams continue to provide a supportive and therapeutic environment for patients.

“We fully accept the areas for improvement identified and are making progress to address these.

“This work is already underway, and we are committed to ensuring our services continue to improve for the people we serve.”
