Keep your child’s mental health balanced this summer break

APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) – For many students, summer vacation signals freedom, but the sudden loss of daily routines, predictability, and regular peer interaction can take a heavy toll on a child’s well-being. Mental health and wellness service providers like Catalpa Health note that mental health challenges persist, and this transition can be particularly difficult for children already managing ADHD, anxiety, or depression.

According to a survey from The Kids Mental Health Foundation, increased screen time, general boredom, and disrupted sleep schedules rank as the top summer concerns for parents. While a little boredom can be healthy, encouraging creativity and problem-solving, experts emphasize that the goal is balance.

To maintain healthy habits without school structure, consistency is key. Caregivers should keep wake-up and bedtime schedules relatively routinized, plan regular meals, and schedule opportunities for physical activity and face-to-face socializing. Building responsibilities, like chores or summer jobs, and creating simple daily moments for family connection, like eating dinner together, goes a long way.

Parents should still stay on alert for deeper behavioral shifts during the summer months. Warning signs include increased irritability, significant changes in sleep or eating habits, and a total loss of interest or withdrawal from activities and friends they normally enjoy.

If these noticeable emotional or behavioral changes last for weeks rather than days, parents should trust their instincts and seek professional help. Reaching out to an adolescent mental health professional during the summer is an excellent way to establish early support and ensure a smoother transition before the next school year begins.

Parents do not need to feel pressured to create a “perfect” summer, but they should ensure boredom does not turn into persistent isolation. Children benefit most with their parents’ support.
