Parenting and mental health: “No one knows what’s going on behind closed doors”

To find out more, CBeebies Parenting spoke to Stephen Buckley, Head of Information at Mind.

Mind is an independent charity working across England and Wales, providing information, advice and support for people affected by mental health problems.

“We’ve known for a while that parental mental health is a really important topic to address,” Stephen says.

“It impacts the life of the child. Get it right, and the chances are the child will flourish and thrive.”

“People still might feel a sense of shame, or a sense of inadequacy, that they’re having to ask for help.”

Particularly with a new baby, when parents may feel they’ll be judged for needing support. A bad experience of asking for help in the past can also make it harder to reach out again.

But, as Stephen explains, it’s important to reach out.
