With a Titanium Frame and Next-Gen Health Tech, This Rugged Smartwatch Is Perfect for Trail Running

Whether you’re a runner, lifter, swimmer, or climber, it makes sense that you want a smart watch that works with you, not just for you. The Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is just that – a smart device designed to support your efforts, pushing you not only towards PBs, but a better picture of personal health.

In a watch full of standout features, its trail running capabilities really go the distance. Its subscription-free trail-running activity, for example, takes you along GPX routes in real time. Unsure whether to turn left or right at that tree? The Ultra2 will know. Paired with your Samsung Health app, it even tracks elevation as you move, letting you know just how many hills you have to climb and how many are lurking behind the next switchback.

“It’s a great way of pacing yourself,” says Lee Dinham, a product specialist at Samsung. “The last thing you want to do is burn your energy at the start, with another 200 metre elevation ahead of you.” Even on multi-day efforts, where poor battery life can spell the difference between victory and defeat, the Ultra2’s 800 milliampere-hour battery (Samsung’s longest-lasting) gives you the support you need while you focus, whether you’re tackling undulating terrain or 400m repeats on the track.

Big Tech

There’s another great feature within the trail functionality; the watch will literally track your nutrition and hydration metrics, advising you in real time whether you need to take a swig of water, or top up electrolytes — all by monitoring your heart rate, calories burnt, ambient temperature and more. A vital tool if you want to avoid crashing out early.

You’ll look good while working out, too. With a new strap design, complete with cooling air pockets, the watch balances aesthetics with functionality. Take its titanium frame and shock- and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass, which make it one of Samsung’s most durable watches. It’s also protecting the brand’s brightest screen to date at 5,000 nits, meaning whether you’re working out in the park, or kicking back on the beach after a hard morning’s graft, you won’t miss a thing. Should you be into wild swimming — or, more likely, the occasional cold-water plunge — you’ll be pleased to hear it’s also water-resistant down to 100 metres.

Within the watch, you’ll find all the usual health metric trackers, from insights into sleep data (with actionable health and training advice), to heart rate variability and even a mindfulness feature that flags high-stress situations¹. What really helps the Ultra2 stand apart, however, is the ‘Vitals’ feature², which tracks everything from your blood oxygen to skin temperature and heart rate variability over seven nights, and if anything’s off, it will suggest ways to get back to your baseline. “It might notice your temperature is creeping up, which could be a sign of illness,” says Dinham. “It might then suggest a few more hours of sleep to help you recover.”

What Lies Beneath

The Ultra2 digs deeper still; the Heart Health Score³ tracks a range of metrics from BMI* to activity levels, offering real-time tips on how to improve. This isn’t data overload, but rather a way of better understanding your body and what you can do to help it perform at its best. “What’s great about that is that if you’re doing back-to-back 5Ks, your heart rate might be high for sustained periods, which could have a negative effect on your cardiovascular system,” says Dinham. “This feature can say, ‘Your vigorous activity is too high. Maybe try taking a rest day or two.’”

Fitness goals come in all shapes and sizes. The first step to achieving them? It’s on your wrist.
