Ray Winstone Reveals He Had to End a Years-Long Feud with Guy Ritchie Before Joining The Gentlemen

Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen has returned to Netflix for its second series, with Ray Winstone reprising his role as criminal patriarch Bobby Glass.

But while Winstone feels like a natural fit for Ritchie’s particular brand of British gangster drama, the pair’s eventual collaboration was decades in the making.

Speaking in a previous interview with Men’s Health, Winstone revealed that he and Ritchie had originally come close to working together on the director’s 1998 cult classic, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, before a disagreement drove them apart.

‘We nearly did [work together], years and years ago, and we had a little fallout,’ Winstone said. ‘We were younger kids, arguing, and kind of fell out.’

The separation lasted for years – although Winstone continued following Ritchie’s career from afar.

‘It’s a shame, because over the years I watched his films and, you know, begrudgingly liked them,’ he joked.

The pair were eventually brought back together by mutual acquaintances, giving them the opportunity to clear the air.

‘We had a chat,’ Winstone explained. ‘I suppose it’s part of growing up – becoming a man instead of a silly little boy. We had a little chat and a little hug, as you do in the film business.’

Now firmly reconciled, Winstone says the experience of finally working with Ritchie lived up to expectations.

‘I’ve got to say, I really enjoyed it,’ he said. ‘I enjoyed working with him. I enjoyed the process.’
