The recent trial of Lindsay Clancy, who says she sought treatment for severe postpartum depression before killing her three children and attempting to take her own life, is shining a new light on maternal mental health.
Research shows that 1 in 5 women will experience depression or anxiety during or after pregnancy, and those numbers are trending up. Yet, there is still a significant stigma around maternal mental health, with one study showing that 62% of mothers feel judged for seeking out help.
Dr. Tiwalola Osunfisan, a psychiatrist with Henry Ford Health specializing in maternal mental health, joined Local 4 on Tuesday to help break down the stigma that surrounds it.
