Huntsman Mental Health Institute Celebrates 40 Years of Clinical Care and Five Years of Transformative Growth

Huntsman Mental Health Institute at the University of Utah is celebrating two landmark anniversaries in 2026: 40 years of providing compassionate, evidence-based mental health care and five years since the dedication of Huntsman Mental Health Institute, made possible through an historic $150 million gift from the Huntsman Family Foundation.

Building on more than 78 years of educational excellence in the Department of Psychiatry, the hospital at 501 Chipeta Way and its predecessor, University Neuropsychiatric Institute (UNI), have helped shape mental health care in Utah. Today, Huntsman Mental Health Institute is a leading academic mental health center providing inpatient, outpatient, crisis, community, and specialty care for people of all ages across the Mountain West.

“For decades, our clinicians, researchers, educators, and staff have worked to expand access to mental health care, develop innovative treatments, train the next generation of providers, and provide hope and healing to individuals and families,” said James Ashworth, MD, interim chair of the Department of Psychiatry and the institute’s psychiatric medical director. “We are grateful for how far we’ve come and inspired by what lies ahead.”
