Increase in screen time brings eye issues during pandemic, El Paso doctor says

For nearly two years, many people have been working from home.

Doctors say the increased screen time is having an impact on overall eye health.

“I’ve seen more people complaining of dryness which can be associated with eye irritation and redness. When we’re on a computer, we’re not blinking nearly enough, so our eyes become dry and not lubricated. When we’re starring at a computer screen that can cause blur as well.” says Dr. Karina Quiñones an optometrist at University Vision Centre.

Dr. Quiñones recommends taking breaks when you use a screen for long periods of time.

This helps your eyes relax and for more comfortable vision.

When we look at screens, we blink about 50 percent less.

Doctors also recommend the 20/20/20 rule, every 20 minutes look towards an object 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds, this will help prevent eye strain.

Nearsightedness also continues to rise, if you do begin to notice blurriness or problems focusing see an eye doctor as soon as possible.

Other tips that are recommended are artificial teardrops and blue light coating on glasses.

Many devices now have options to minimize blue light, you may want to look into those options as well.

As our eyes work harder, our eyeglass prescriptions may shift.

Doctors’ biggest recommendations are to get your eyes checked at least once a year.
