LA CROSSE (WKBT) – Health experts are urging people to keep their health in mind over Independence Day weekend.
Heat-related illnesses can be prevented by staying in the shade and resting during the hotter hours of the day.
Also, it’s important to keep hydrated with non-alcoholic fluids.
If you do want to drink alcohol, doctors recommend men only drink two drinks a day, and women can have one drink a day.
Experts also caution against lighting fireworks while drinking.
“People do lose fingers, lose limbs, have trouble with vision because they’re hit in the eye,” said Dr. Joel Greenya with Mayo Clinic Health System.
Dr. Greenya says you should leave the fireworks to the professionals.
If you’re lighting sparklers with kids around, keep a close eye on them and consider wearing safety goggles and gloves.
