Where should I get a small tattoo?
Artists advise not getting small tattoos on your hands and feet because they fade faster. Aurich notes that this is especially true for those looking to get fine-line tattoos, so expect to make an extra visit for touchups.
What should the aftercare process look like for small tattoos?
Most tattoos take three to four weeks to heal regardless of the size, and cleaning them regularly is a huge part of the aftercare process.
“We always advise to wash it at least twice a day, morning and night for at least two weeks with unscented soap and Aquaphor,” says Aurich, noting that not taking proper care of new ink can lead to infection.
Itching is also common, but (and I can’t stress this enough) don’t scratch. If you have pets, ask your artist about the wrapping options they can use to keep your tattoo away from your furry friends for as long as possible since they might try to get to it. You also shouldn’t drink alcohol before or after your appointment.
Many people prefer to not get tattoos over the summer since you won’t be allowed to swim, tan, or hang in the sun for up to three weeks. And for all you gym lovers, you’ll have to hold off on your sweat sessions for at least 48 hours, so consider taking an extended rest day.
