Staten Islander Anthony Camerada named recipient of FDNY Fire Academy’s Physical Fitness Award

New Dorp Beach resident Anthony Camerada takes pride in being physically fit, and it was evident throughout his trials at the FDNY’s Fire Academy for incoming firefighters. Camerada, 25, was named the recipient of the academy’s Physical Fitness Award, given to the graduate who displays the top combined scores from the 19-week program’s functional skills training tests.

The trials include rigorous obstacle courses, push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, and a 1.5-mile run, in addition to other tests.

“The FDNY Fitness Unit Instructors at the Academy were motivating and pushed us to be our best every day. A team is only as strong as its weakest link and in the Fire Department we are always working as a team,” noted Camerada, who has previously worked as an NYPD and MTA officer, as well as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Camerada, who was a baseball player at New Dorp HS and St. Joseph’s College, is also an active member of the local road running community.

Camera previously completed the NYC Marathon.

“Physical fitness has always been a big part of my life,” he said. “I served in the U.S. Coast Guard and the emphasis on physical fitness was there as well. I enjoy cross training, cycling and recently ran the New York City Marathon.”

“Being in good physical condition is so important as a firefighter; not only does it benefit the public we serve but also benefits those working side by side with you to get the job done,” added Camerada. “In my mind, I knew I would be able to be an asset to the department, and apply my skills and experiences to really make a difference.”

He will put his skills to good use when he hits the job in full force, where he will be stationed on Staten Island. For him, serving New York City is a dream job.

“As far back as I could remember, I always knew I wanted to be a first responder, and dedicate my life to helping others,” said Camerada. “The selfless attributes instilled in me by my loving parents growing up, motivated me to always follow my dreams, do the right thing (even when no one is looking), give whatever I’m partaking in my 100% effort, and most importantly, stay humble.

“The training I received was like no other, and there is a clear reason why the department is highly recognized and respected around the world,” he concluded. “I would like to give a special thank you to my family and friends — without their constant strong and encouraging support, I would not be where I am today.”
