Hair loss is a surprisingly common condition. A quarter of men start to go bald by the time they turn 30. Two thirds will experience some amount of hair loss by the age of 60. And, in their lifetime, near enough all men will lose their hair to some degree. Provide much comfort? Probably not.
While it’s good to know that others share in your discomfort, hair loss can be an incredibly lonely, not to mention helpless, condition. It’s something you’re reminded of daily, and despite what those around you tell you, it can have a real impact on your self-image and mental health. The good news is that there’s now plenty of online clinical options that make some forms of hair loss entirely treatable.
Hims, an online medical platform, wants to make more men aware of this fact. Providing a range of at-home treatments, Hims connects patients with licenced medical providers in the UK to diagnose conditions, prescribe medications and help men to regrow their hair in as little as three to six months.
How Hims Works
Hims empowers you to take hair loss into your own hands. The process is entirely online from start to finish, and begins with an online consultation with a licenced medical provider. If applicable, your personalised treatment is then custom made for you and discreetly shipped to your home.
That’s it, essentially – no doctor’s visits, no waiting for an appointment, no trips to the chemist. Here’s each step in a little more detail:
1 – Online consultation
Once you’ve answered a few simple questions about yourself and your hair regrowth goals, Hims will then connect you with a licenced clinician who will review your responses. All the information you provide remains encrypted and confidential, just as it would if you were visiting a GP.
2 – Treatment plan tailored to you
Once your medical provider has reviewed your information, you will then (if appropriate for your condition) be prescribed one of Hims’ range of personalised treatments for hair loss, which are custom made for you and filled at a licenced pharmacy.
3 – Prescriptions shipped to your door
For convenience, Hims ships your prescriptions directly to you and arranges automatic refills, so you don’t have the hassle of having to pick them up from a chemist or pharmacy. You can also review your treatment options online at any time and manage your deliveries.
4 – Ongoing care from licensed providers
With a prescription, you can arrange virtual follow-ups at your discretion for free with your matched healthcare expert should you have any questions or concerns.
Hims Hair Loss Treatments
Hims uses doctor-trusted ingredients and all of its treatments are prescribed through licenced healthcare providers. They offer a range of treatments for hair loss, which come in spray, serum, chew or tablet formats.
This is a topical spray that you apply directly to your scalp once a day. It contains minoxidil and finasteride, two common hair loss medicines which have been used for decades as a way of treating male pattern baldness.
Clinically shown to work best when used together, finasteride stops your body from converting testosterone into DHT, a hormone that causes you to lose hair faster and earlier, while minoxidil has been found to increase blood flow to the hair roots, which stimulates hair growth and strength.
This particular spray has been formulated so that it is quick-drying for convenience and housed in a spray bottle for quick and direct application.
This treatment also contains finasteride and minoxidil, but is taken orally as a citrus-flavoured chew tablet, as opposed to applying directly to the skin.
Taken once per day, it includes a range of additional ingredients designed to help promote hair health, including biotin, which supports healthy hair, vitamin B5 for boosting hydration, and ketoconazole, which has been shown to support scalp health.
This option is similar to the topical finasteride and minoxidil spray, but comes in serum form with a precision dropper so you can more accurately apply it to certain areas. Used once a day, you apply it before blow drying or styling your hair once it has fully soaked into your scalp.
