Lupus, or systemic lupus erythematosus, is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks healthy tissue. Skin, joints, kidneys, brain and other organs can be involved.
Causes may be genetic, environmental, hormonal and certain medications. It is most likely to occur in young women between the ages of 15 and 44, in African Americans, Asian Americans, African Caribbeans and Hispanic Americans.
