OPINION: Pharmacy benefit managers are maximizing profits, not keeping health care costs down

New Mexico took a big step forward this year in health care when the governor signed a drug pricing transparency bill into law. Included in the list of organizations that will be mandated to report prices and trends are health insurance companies and the pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) that they work with on drug acquisition, approval and pricing.

The Federal Trade Commission released a report on PBMs and initiated a lawsuit, the House Oversight Committee is investigating their actions, and attorneys general nationwide are weighing in on PBMs. Now, lawmakers in Washington, D.C., including U.S. Sens. Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Luján, need to keep up their commitment to New Mexicans’ access to quality affordable health care and push for more PBM reform.
