AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Department of Public Safety’s Fitness Wellness Unit has been honored with the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund’s 2024 Officer Wellness Award. The unit was recognized for its comprehensive efforts to enhance the physical and mental health of DPS personnel statewide.
“The physical and mental health of our employees—commissioned and non-commissioned—is imperative to DPS’ mission to serve and protect Texas,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “This award is a testament to the Fitness Wellness Unit’s unwavering commitment to enhancing the overall well-being of our agency’s personnel both while they serve and after they retire from a life of service.”
The award was announced at the annual Destination Zero National Officer Safety and Wellness Awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. It is given to law enforcement agencies that have developed programs to improve officers’ wellbeing by reducing stress, increasing fitness, or promoting healthier lifestyles, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The Fitness Wellness Unit, part of the Training Operations Division, is responsible for mental and physical conditioning for Trooper Trainees, conducting physical fitness tests for commissioned Troopers, and assisting all personnel with fitness, nutrition, sleep, and stress management. Since its inception in 2010, the unit has expanded significantly, offering educational wellness programs and exercise classes at DPS Headquarters and the State Capitol Complex.
