For Eco Chic Salon, Beauty is More than Skin Deep with Mobile Breast Cancer Screening Event

Beauty may be more than skin deep, but the team at Eco Chic Salon Spa and Blow Dry Bar is showing their care for clients extends well beyond how someone looks after visiting the salon.

Eco Chic owner Michele Maestri-Murphy wanted to do something meaningful for the salon’s clients and the extended Wilton community for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Growing out of her own experience, she wanted to help provide an option to area women for access to a breast ultrasound screening.

On Monday, Oct. 7, Eco Chic will host HerScan, a breast ultrasound mobile health screening event from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“I hadn’t gotten a mammogram in quite some time, and I was scared to death to go. I went to another location that wasn’t a medical facility and had this ultrasound screening done and it was much less intimidating. I thought it was great and it’s non-invasive. Usually people with dense breasts have to have an ultrasound anyway, so that’s the reason why I wanted to offer it here,” Maestri-Murphy said.

She added that she felt comfortable with the technician who performed the ultrasound and the experience. “The technician was very, very calming, and efficient. They basically send the information to a radiologist that reviews it, and they email you a response,” she said.

According to the HerScan website, the ultrasounds performed during mobile events are screenings, rather than diagnostic ultrasounds. The purpose is to “aim atidentifying disease in people who are seemingly healthy, as well as to educate and create awareness.” Breast Ultrasound Screenings use ultrasound technology to screen both breasts, and the area under the arm.

While the screenings that will be offered on Monday aren’t intended to diagnose anyone, HerScan says the ultrasounds performed will be seen by a board-certified radiologist and any significant findings will be noted by the radiologist on a completed report; participants will then be recommended to follow up with their primary care physicians or OB/GYN for further diagnostic testing.

Anyone interested in learning more or scheduling one of the screenings for MOnday can call 800.338.7499 or visit the HerScan website.

HerScan screenings includes a scan of both breasts with the axilla (underarm area), the radiologist reading fee and costs $295 (what HerScan says is a $1,100 value). Payment is due at the time of service and can be made by major credit cards and debit cards. Most FSA and HSA cards can be accepted as long as they have a major credit card label on them. No prescription or referral from a doctor is required to utilize HerScan’s screening service.
