Dave Bautista Lost 34kg at 57 – Now His Kratos Transformation for ‘God of War’ Begins

The rumours were true: Dave Bautista will officially play Kratos in Prime Video’s adaptation of God of War.

The 57-year-old actor replaces Ryan Hurst, who had originally been cast in the role but suffered a torn biceps on set, initially forcing production to pause. Since news broke that Amazon was searching for a replacement, Bautista – best known to many as Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy – had emerged as the frontrunner. Now it’s official.

On paper, it’s easy to see why. Bautista spent years carrying the kind of enormous physique you’d readily associate with the famously muscular Spartan warrior.

But the Bautista of 2026 looks very different from the man who once stepped into a WWE ring.

Dave Bautista’s 34kg Weight Loss

In 2024, Bautista revealed that he’d undergone a dramatic transformation, dropping from 143kg to around 109kg.

The process began after deliberately gaining weight for M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin. Speaking on the Insight with Chris Van Vliet podcast, Bautista admitted he’d taken the bulk further than intended.

‘I think I overdid it. I just got really big… I put on an uncomfortable amount of weight.’

Having reached 143kg – heavier than he had been for much of his professional wrestling career – Bautista decided to slim down.

‘I started trimming down because I just got really big,’ he explained. ‘I’ve sacrificed a lot of muscle, but I’m okay with it because I just feel more comfortable.’

By late 2024, Bautista said he was leaner than he’d been since he was 19.

Rather than continuing to chase as much muscle as possible, his training shifted towards cardio and jiu-jitsu, alongside a more controlled approach to his diet.

And the change wasn’t simply aesthetic.

‘Now that I’m older – fucking old – this has done a lot for me,’ Bautista subsequently said of his training. ‘I feel better now than I have in years because my training is so good. My cardio is awesome.’

Will Dave Bautista Bulk Up to Play Kratos?

That’s now the big question.

Bautista has spoken openly in recent years about moving away from the enormous physique that defined his wrestling career and some of his earlier Hollywood roles. Kratos, however, is one of gaming’s most famously muscular characters.

His predecessor Ryan Hurst reportedly spent months transforming for the role, adding significant size in preparation to play the God of War protagonist.

Whether Bautista will attempt anything similar remains to be seen. At 57, there’s little reason to assume he’ll want – or need – to return to the 140kg-plus physique of his past.

And given his background, it’s hardly as though he’s starting from scratch. Beneath the significantly leaner frame is a man who spent decades bodybuilding, wrestling and building serious strength.

What his version of Kratos ultimately looks like – and how much of his old mass Bautista decides to rebuild for the role – may now be almost as intriguing as the casting itself.
